Florence, 15th September, 2011

At the 47th European EASD congress (European Association for Studies on Diabetes), held this month in Lisbon, A. Menarini Diagnostics presented their latest instrument, the GlucoMen LX Plus, a glucometer which allows diabetic patients to check not only their glucose but also their ketone levels, from one tiny blood sample.

Ketones in the blood are indicative of an impaired glucose metabolism, linked to changes in the concentration or ineffectiveness of insulin in the body. This may occur in a number of circumstances and may be caused by other unrelated illnesses or by pharmacological treatments which, in a range of different ways, may trigger off significant and repeated fluctuations in the amount of insulin released into the patient’s bloodstream.

When this happens, the organism starts to produce ketones which, if they exceed a certain level and go untreated, may give rise to DKA or Diabetic Ketoacidosis, a condition which, in extreme cases can lead to diabetic coma.

GlucoMen LX Plus is the very first system which allows patients to test their ketone levels in a safe and discreet way, using the same instrument they would use to test their blood glucose, without the need to calibrate or engage in complicated or risky handling.

Crescenzio Izzo, General Manager of A. Menarini Diagnostics, at the moment of the European launch of the GlucoMen LX Plus, commented: "We are proud to be able to offer, once again, an important and exclusive contribution towards improving the quality of life of diabetic patients, helping not only those who suffer from this chronic condition but also all those healthcare professionals who assiduously seek to reduce the social impact of the disease. In times as difficult and complex as these, when we are all called upon to curb public expenditure in the healthcare sector, A. Menarini Diagnostics has both strenthened and confirmed its commitment to carrying out research with the aim of reducing the cost of diabetes management: and the GlucoMen LX Plus is the epitome of this more than 30 year undertaking."
