Menarini Asia-Pacific’s Empowering Our Communities initiative recently brought ten members of staff to Cabagan, in the Philippines, to join a Smile Asia medical mission as volunteers. What unfolded was a week that reached far beyond medical care: from the first warm welcome offered to each family to the patients’ life-changing smiles at its close, it was shaped above all by human connection.

The mission brought together 50 volunteers from across the world, all united by a single purpose. More than 30 of them were medical professionals — plastic surgeons, nurses, anaesthetists, and speech therapists — who had come from the United States, Japan, Singapore, the Philippines, and Myanmar. Working alongside them were the ten Menarini volunteers, the Smile Asia team, and a group of local coordinators, proving once again that geography is no barrier to compassion.

The mission opened with Screening Day: patients moved through a series of stations where the medical team assessed whether they were fit for surgery, while the Menarini volunteers managed registrations, digitised medical records, and guided families from one check-up to the next. For many patients, this was the first step toward a future they had once thought impossible.
Heartwarming Stories of Hope
The scale of what came next could be counted in numbers, but it was really measured in smiles. Over four intensive days, the surgical team completed 64 operations for patients living with facial deformities. Seeing those changes unfold, day after day, was a powerful reminder of everything that now lies ahead for them: better nutrition, clearer speech, and a life free from the weight of social stigma. The Menarini volunteers were proud to support this work behind the scenes: some took on the role of patient imaging technicians, documenting the “before and after” journeys that will stand as a lasting record of each milestone, while others had the chance to observe surgeries first-hand and came away with a deep appreciation for the precision and care every procedure demands.

Yet it was the personal stories, more than the clinical results, that left the deepest mark. After her daughter’s cleft palate surgery, one mother shared her hopes for the years to come: «I hope Amari grows up to be a nurse, so she can go on medical missions and help other children». Moments like these are a reminder of how far the impact of a single operation can reach.
In the end, the mission stands as a testament to what becomes possible when people come together around a clear, shared purpose. Empowering communities is part of who Menarini is, and by supporting these life-changing surgeries — and providing the tools for a lasting recovery — the company is helping to build a world where everyone has the chance to smile.
