Cardio protection for Badalona: because every second could save a life

Sudden cardiac death, a sort of short circuit in the heart’s electrical system, can strike anybody unexpectedly. Every year, around 400,000 people in Europe suffer cardiac arrest. In such cases, time is a determining factor. This is what makes it so important to make as many defibrillators as possible available outside of hospital settings, creating a safety net of constantly available machines that can make the difference between a person’s life or death in just a few minutes. However, these life-saving devices, capable of making the most of every precious minute, are still not sufficiently widespread. This ambitious project by Menarini Spain aims to make Badalona a “cardio-protected city”. It has provided latest-generation portable defibrillators—easy to use even for non-professionals—to a network of 26 pharmacies. This enables immediate intervention in cases where first aid is needed while waiting for the ambulance to arrive, because performing CPR and using a defibrillator in the first 3-5 minutes following cardiac arrest doubles or even triples survival rates.
